Private Moment is an acting exercise based on Lee Strasberg’s “Method,” aimed at generating self-forgetful behavior that would immediately stop if someone (an audience member) entered the space. In this performance, the “apartment,” which at the time was stored in plastic bags at a friend’s place, served as the stage set.
For 90 minutes, the phrase “Without you I am nothing” was repeated while performing actions of solitude, with the intention of connecting the acting method to the performance practice: Private behavior (including dressing, applying makeup, self-talk, eating, drinking, chatting, surfing, listening to music, dancing, “rehearsing,” etc.) was exposed, privacy broken open, and the show that is normally staged for oneself was shared with the audience through the mirror and computer camera without hesitation.
The performance deals with the representation of women on screen and stage, presence and absence, the self and the other—the missing counterpart, privacy and publicity, being alone and loneliness, exhibitionism and voyeurism.
