Lulu Obermayer’s artistic practice stages encounters with female figures from the canon.
Named after a titular heroine herself, the artist confronts her namesake in the solo performance LULU, reflecting herself in the dramatic figure. Lulu is seen as a projection of male fantasy, and there seems to be consensus on who she is: a femme fatale who brings ruin upon herself and those around her. It is said that Lulu functions as a mirror. But which Lulu looks back when Lulu gazes into the mirror?
To create a more complex image of the character, the artist traces sources connected to , conjuring a séance-like setting, invoking her predecessors, and bringing them into conversation. The monologue thus becomes a dialogue. Her references include Frank Wedekind’s plays EARTH SPIRIT and PANDORA'S BOX, Tilly Wedekind’s autobiography LULU, THE ROLE OF MY LIFE, G.W. Pabst’s film PANDORA'S BOX, Louise Brooks’ memoir LULU IN HOLLYWOOD, Alban Berg’s opera LULU, and Kathy Acker’s LULU UNCHAINED.
