In a monologue, Lulu Obermayer celebrates the radical artistic practice of Broadway dancer, choreographer, and painter Marta Becket. In 1967, Becket discovered a derelict theater in Death Valley Junction, California, and transformed it into the Amargosa Opera House, where she lived and performed until her passing in 2017.
Obermayer's performance intertwines audience interaction, light, and shadow, narrating tales of spirits, time, and devotion. This creates a mirage where theater, dreams, and destiny converge. In a spectral duet, planetary alignments reflect on the (im)possibility of an artistic life. The piece underscores theater's potential as a mirror of life—a space for communal remembrance and farewell.
Concept, Research, and Performance: Lulu Obermayer
