Lulu Obermayer's performance for the opening of steirischer herbst addresses the masculinity that underpins much of the opera tradition. The artist has long been engaged with gender relations in opera, but never before has she worked with male singers and their voices in this way. The performance confronts an eerie monument from the interwar period by Wilhelm Gößer, which was erected in honor of a disbanded infantry regiment that had fought in Galicia and Italy during World War I.
